Greyhound Walk to support end of racing | Events
Dozens of retired racing greyhounds and their humans wll be walking along Park Avenue on Sunday September 19 to rescue thousands of dogs over the coming year.
The event is hosted by Greyhound Adoption of Greater Rochester, funds raised at this year’s walk will be donated to a Melbourne, FL adoption group experiencing a glut of discarded racing greyhounds as the popularity of dog racing wanes.
Greyhound Pets of America of Central Florida (GPA-CF), which operates an adoption kennel at the Melbourne, FL racetrack, serves as the largest source for dogs placed around the Rochester area.
The walk is held each year in conjunction with Greyhound Planet Day, a national event promoting retired racers as pets. The two-mile walk begins at 1:00pm, and concludes with an ice cream social at Park Avenue Green Park at Barrington St. at approximately 1:45pm. Spectators are welcome to root for the walkers, and to meet the dogs at the gathering at the park.
Participants will gather at 1:00pm at 930 East Ave. (Greater Rochester Association of Realtors) before proceeding along Barrington St. to Park Ave., heading first west then east, winding up at Park Avenue Green Park at Barrington St. Information on adopting a retired racing greyhound will be available. The event wraps up around 3:00pm.
While the event is open to the public, the organization asks that visitors refrain from bringing other dog breeds to the gathering, especially small dogs or other pets.
