Thompson Health Center now an affiliate of URMC | News
Patients in Ontario and Yates County will no longer have to travel for care now that two major healthcare systems have joined forces.
It’s a partnership that’s been in the works for years and now healthcare will be improving for patients with special care in Ontario and Yates counties. Thompson Health and University of Rochester Medical Center are now working together to improve healthcare in the area.
Thompson Health provides care to more than 160,000 residents, many of whom have to travel into Rochester to receive care. It all changed Thursday morning after the healthcare system announced an affiliation with University of Rochester Medical Center. They say their goal is to provide the right care, at the right time, in the right way.
Officials from both healthcare systems signed the agreement Thursday morning. The plan is to further develop programs to keep care close to home and move forward with healthcare reform. They also plan to have better coordination between the medical centers so that patients will be in the same system. The goal is to have treatment plans in place once the patient arrives making the transfers smooth and safe. The two systems have had multiple connections over time, but they call this partnership, a natural evolution, working for cost effective quality care.
Linda Farchione, Thompson Health President/CEO, said, “It bonds us together in a way that the University of Rochester and the University of Rochester Medical Center to be able to provide a more comprehensive approach to care for the people of our region.
Dr. Bradford Berk, University of Rochester, said, “It's truly an affiliation where we agree to help them build programs and in return they will send their most complex patients to the medical center.”
Officials say they spent a lot of time making sure they shared similar values and culture when it comes to healthcare. They say they hope the whole arrangement will ultimately bring down the cost of healthcare for patients. One of the ways they say they’ll do that is to try to be more creative with payment systems, something new they will be trying out.
